Sold-Out at Rainbow Theatre in Amman for Disunited Nations: Francesca Albanese Speaks of “Distortions” and Persecution – Exclusive Interview

AMMAN – I arrive at the Rainbow Theatre around 8:30 PM on February 22, 2026. The line outside is already long. Upstairs, the book table is overwhelmed. English copies of A Moon Will Rise from the Darkness: Reports on Israel’s Genocide in Palestine by Francesca Albanese sell out in less than five minutes — completely gone.

Inside the theater, the room is packed. Some attendees sit on the floor, others along the aisles. When the UN Special Rapporteur enters, the audience erupts into prolonged applause.

The screening begins: Disunited Nations, a documentary by Christophe Cotteret exploring the contradictions of the United Nations multilateral system in the face of contemporary conflicts, with particular focus on Palestine.

Interview

Question 1

How do you feel after this situation in which the truth has been distorted, also in reference to the request for your resignation by France?

Francesca Albanese:
I feel like someone living in a situation where the truth is being distorted. For three years now, words have been taken out of context. And yet, no one talks about my work — about the substance of my investigations. In fact, the attacks exist precisely to avoid discussing my findings, to discredit them.

If my investigations were not so serious and distressing, they would not have led to the persecution I am experiencing. But I am calm. My conscience is clear. I continue to do what I must do.

On a human level, I am heartbroken. We live in a system where civilians die every day — from bombs, from hunger, without medical care. In 2026, this is a monstrosity of our time. If we do not emerge from this better, we will all be in greater danger.

Question 2

Is international law still useful?

Francesca Albanese:
Absolutely. Especially now. Democracy cannot function by delegation alone. Young people must become more engaged in the political life of their countries.

This genocide has revealed the connections between the financial sector, the arms industry, surveillance technology, and political power. We cannot leave public space in the hands of ultra-capitalist forces.

Question 3

Does the United Nations need reform?

Francesca Albanese:
The UN reflects the algebraic sum of its member states. Change must happen at the country level. Many so-called liberal democracies have adopted illiberal models. That is deeply concerning.

Final Question

How do you imagine Gaza in two years?

Francesca Albanese:
As it is now. I don’t think much will change if this farce of “Border peace” continues. There is no peace on paper nor on the horizon. This is a very dangerous time for all of us. I hope for a genuine awakening — of peoples, of democracy, of active citizenship.
